As the world moves to net zero emissions and develops clean energy technologies, demand for minerals and metals will grow exponentially. To meet this demand without increasing carbon emissions, it is essential that companies collaborate to decarbonize the electricity supply, mitigate the environmental impact of energy-intensive processes linked to these critical resources and reduce emissions from the sector. Scope 3 Emissions.
Materialize is a continuation of Schneider Electric’s suite of supply chain decarbonization programs since its Sustainable business consulting division, which harnesses the power of supply chain cohorts for large-scale renewable energy procurement. The Materialize program will encourage the entire value chain to shift to renewable energy sources by accelerating the deployment of decarbonization projects and softwareimproving supplier access to large-scale renewable energy solutions, such as power purchase agreements (PPAs).

“We are excited to launch Materialize, our latest collaborative program to reduce Scope 3 emissions. We have a strong track record of working with our customers to achieve their sustainability goals, and this program will accelerate action in this industry,” said Barbara Frei, executive vice president of industrial automation at Schneider Electric. “Educating suppliers across the sector’s wider value chain on the importance of their operating models in closing the net zero ambition gap is essential if we are to decarbonise the sector. Materialize will mark the definitive next steps for the industry to lead the way.
Reducing emissions is a difficult task due to the complexity of the value chain, the availability and reliability of data, and the difficulties in defining the extent of scope 3 emissions from the sector. Suppliers lack expertise in decarbonization and face barriers to progress, such as costs and availability of solutions. Through Materialize, Schneider Electric Sustainability experts will simultaneously collaborate with hundreds of industry suppliers via digital technology platforms and guide them in removing these barriers.
Global Mining Guidelines Group (GMG) Industry Collaborator, CEO Heather Ednie said: “Through collaboration and innovation, the partnership between GMG and Schneider Electric aims to revolutionize the mining supply chain, making it move further towards sustainability. As GMG members push the boundaries of what is possible, Materialize will be instrumental in spreading knowledge to the industry as a whole and establishing clear pathways for it to become more sustainable.
Materialize also has the potential to offer industries outside the sector a way to decarbonize their broader supply chain ecosystems. by seeking out material suppliers who prioritize sustainable, low-carbon production methods.
“Measuring scope 3 emissions shines a light on supply chains and reinforces the importance of circularity. Materialize will help drive circularity in the sector and beyond, and this is something we support,” said Kunal Sinha, Global Head of Recycling at Glencore.
Other Schneider Electric programs include Energize, a collaborative effort within the pharmaceutical industry with over 500 suppliers already participating, and Catalyze for semiconductor companies. Both were created to engage thousands of suppliers simultaneously with the goal of driving rapid, measurable actions to reduce Scope 3 emissions from program sponsors. The portfolio builds on Schneider’s core initiative, The zero carbon projectwhich provides resources and guidance to program participants, encouraging ambitious decarbonization targets with a deployment action plan to achieve them.
